Deira

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Experience Dubai's heritage in Deira, a neighbourhood teeming with character, centuries-old history and spectacular souks. One of the oldest parts of the city, Deira is a key commercial and trading area for Dubai, where age-old markets sit side-by-side with modern developments. Located on the north-east side of Dubai Creek, much of Deira’s character comes from Dubai’s waterway, with the traditional dhow wharfage located on this side of the creek, along with much of the resulting trade. That spirit of commerce is alive and well today, with new markets opening up as part of the Dubai Islands development – along with the centuries-old souks. And from technology to tailoring, and perfumes to percussion, you can find anything you need in Deira. The area’s bustling atmosphere also makes Deira a great dining destination for foodies seeking more than haute cuisine. And it’s also perfect for delving into Dubai’s heritage and history, both through museums and by just walking around the district and taking in the atmosphere. (source: visitdubai.com, 2024)

Bur Dubai

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Relive Dubai's past and trace the city's origins in this storied neighbourhood where traditional souks, authentic dining and seafaring vibes thrive. It all started in Bur Dubai, the oldest neighbourhood in the city. Long before Dubai transformed into an urban metropolis, this area to the west of Dubai Creek was the site of the city’s original settlement. While the settlement continued to expand inland, the creek remained as Bur Dubai’s anchor, with dhows mooring along its banks to load and unload the goods which drove Dubai’s growth as a trading hub. And despite the development of modern ports for huge ships, the shores of Bur Dubai continue to see dhows arrive laden with everything from textiles to technology. Because of its age and history, Bur Dubai is a dense blend of residential and commercial areas, with narrow streets and busy squares – making it a great place to explore for a taste of Old Dubai. The neighbourhood is also home to consulates, temples and the Ruler’s Court, making it a major cultural hub for Dubai as well. (source: visitdubai.com, 2024)
